Food Hygiene

Keep your food and its surroundings pure and clean. This hygiene will keep you healthy and benefit your worldly life.

Why do I need food hygiene training?

Food handlers must receive appropriate supervision, and be instructed and/or trained in food hygiene, to enable them to handle food safely. Those responsible for developing and maintaining the business’s food safety procedures, based on HACCP principles, must have received adequate training. The requirements for training should be seen in the context of the nature and size of the business.

What’s the law?

It’s fairly straight forward. Many people have doubts over whether their local authority, council, or specific company will accept their food hygiene certificate, and are looking for a guarantee that their Food Hygiene Certificate will be accepted.  The bottom line is, that in doing this training, you have met the legal obligation.
The Environmental Health officer is looking to see that food handlers are appropriately trained, and if you don’t have 2-3 hours for food hygiene training, you are at risk of failing your Environmental Health Officer inspection.

What if I’m not running a food business?

It’s still a good idea to have an idea of the principles of food hygiene. Whether it be in your home or wherever it is always good to know basic food hygiene.

How do I know which course to take?

That’s easy. One simple rule:
If you make food to be sold, or sell food directly,  you need the Level 2 Food Hygiene Award for Catering.
It’s the most popular course by far, but be sure to bear in mind that Environmental Health officer will be looking to see that you have refreshed your food hygiene training every 3 years!
